The other day, my nine-year-old daughter asked “Mom, what does WTF mean?”
“It means ‘What Would Jesus Do’,” I said.
“Oh.” She walked away and came back a few minutes later. “But that doesn’t make any sense!”
“Hmmm. Maybe I got mixed up,” I explained. “I think it actually means ‘Warm The Feet’.”
“What?” she said. “Why would someone say that?”
“Because feet get cold, of course. I have to go grocery shopping now …”
The world of text messaging and chat abbreviations is an interesting one, isn’t it? An entire new language has been tailored to the immediacy and compactness of online communication and mobile phones. There are many online dictionaries that explain what all the little acronyms mean. But, there aren’t any that are specifically tailored to rural communication.
So, I’ve decided to start one right here! Below are the initial top 10 rural text message acronyms, for your reference and use.
- PSSST: Meaning – Come on over! I have many flats of beer to share.
- BB: Meaning – Big Bear in my backyard. Run away! Run away!
- BFG: Meaning – Big Friendly Giant in my backyard. Run away! Run away!
- CU: Meaning – Cabbage Underfoot, walk carefully.
- LMAO: Meaning – Learning Macrame All Out. Care to join me?
- DOPE: Meaning – Um …
- OMG: Meaning – Observe My Goats please. I have to go out for a bit.
- BTW: Meaning – Bring The Wrench! Car’s broke.
- ILU: Meaning – Interesting Loud Underwear you’ve got there …
- ROFL: Meaning – Rowdy Ozark Flying Low. Beware!
Got any more to add? Post ‘em and when the dictionary is published, we’ll be famous together!
